Surgery of the Eyelids
Lower Eyelids
Aging changes of the eyes occur in
the lower eyelids as well as the upper eyelids.
The appearance of sagging under the eyes results
from relaxation of the soft tissues under the eye
with protrusion of fat. Furthermore, the cheek fat
descends and this creates a groove between the eyelid
and the cheek.
Lower
eyelid surgery
is aimed at eliminating
the fat bags (and
any extra skin)
under the eye.
Often, the incision
is placed inside
the eyelid to
conceal the scar.
The fat is then
removed or repositioned
to recreate the
harmony of the
lower eyelid and
the cheek. This
procedure can
be performed in
conjunction with
a cheek lift,
or mid-face lift,
in patients with
drooping of this
area.
The
recovery period
with lower eyelid
surgery is approximately
7-10 days. Makeup
can be applied
shortly after
the sutures are
removed at one
week. Lower eyelid
blepharoplasty
is often performed
with upper blepharoplasty
to eliminate the
tired “bags”
under the eyes
while “brightening
up” and
refreshing the
upper eyelids.
