Chemical Peel

The chemical peel is a chemical solution which, when applied to the face, removes the top layers of skin to reveal smoother, younger-looking skin. This is an ideal procedure for individuals with pigment irregularities from sun exposure, large pores, and fine wrinkling. As with other cosmetic surgery procedures, patients should also be in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improvement.

Dr. O'Mara performs the chemical peel in his office procedure room. The procedure takes approximately one hour to complete. While there are a variety of chemical peels which may be used, Dr. O'Mara uses a 35% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel. This is applied to segments of the face until the entire face is covered. It remains on the skin until the outer skin layer begins to peel.

Peeling of the skin will occur within five to seven days after treatment. This will reveal the new fresher and smoother looking skin beneath with fewer pigment irregularities and smaller pores. A protective ointment is continually applied to the skin to promote healing, typically for one to two weeks. Redness is common and can last for two to four weeks, though makeup can be worn after two weeks to help disguise the redness. Patients may also experience some temporary discomfort, tingling, itching and swelling. Work and social activities can usually be resumed after one to two weeks, while more strenuous activities can be resumed after two to three weeks. The skin will need to be protected from the sun to avoid pigmentation recurrence and further sun damage.

With a relatively short healing time, the chemical peel can improve many skin irregularities and restore a fresher, more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
