Laser resurfacing, also referred to as a laser peel, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to smooth the skin and improve wrinkles and contour irregularities. While often performed on the entire face, isolated areas like those around the eyes or mouth may be treated alone. Laser resurfacing also provides a generalized tightening of the facial skin, producing a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Laser resurfacing is an ideal procedure for individuals with deep wrinkling throughout the face or those with non-active acne scarring. As with other cosmetic procedures, patients should have realistic expectations for improvement and be in good physical health.

Dr. O'Mara performs the laser resurfacing procedure at an outpatient surgery center using general anesthesia. Surgical times average one to one and one-half hours in length. During treatment, the CO2 laser is applied to the treatment area and carefully passed back and forth over the skin until the skin thickness is reduced to a smoother level. After treatment, an ointment or cream is applied to the treatment area until healing has occurred.

Devoting sufficient time to heal after treatment is the most important factor. Redness is common after laser resurfacing and can last up to six weeks. However, makeup can be applied within two to three weeks to help disguise the redness. A protective ointment will need to be applied regularly to the skin to promote healing during the first two to three weeks. Patients may also experience some mild discomfort and swelling.

Most work can be resumed after two to three weeks while more strenuous activities and exercise can be resumed after three weeks. Patients will need to protect the treated skin from the sun for a period of time as exposure can lead to temporary pigmentation irregularities of the skin. In fact, it's often a good idea to plan the laser resurfacing treatment during months when sunlight isn't as intense.

Laser resurfacing can dramatically improve wrinkled or acne scarred skin, restoring a smoother and more youthful face.
